We are reaching the end of January. Month end! Wow time flies! January is known as the coldest month in the winter here and so far I can see, or should I say, feel why they say so!
Temperatures are reaching lows of -19, feeling like -24! The only upside when temperatures drop so low, means for more sunny days! Having a beautiful day can help you get through the severe cold days, instead of having a very gray, cold and dark day. Trust me, it can get depressing!
Everywhere, you see people bringing out, what I like to call, January attire.
Some switch to bigger, bulkier jackets. Those you would usually wear with ski pants, which some also do. It’s funny actually! I am still trying to really understand some people! You get those people who would go out and buy a pair of ski pants with a good looking, matching jacket. Making sure they still look fashionable…well some do. And then for shoes…………….UGGS!!!
The shoes are soaked by the time they reach the bus stop around the corner. What does that help? Another thing… On those beautiful sunny days when temperatures are unbearably cold, you can’t stay outside for more than 5 min. They would wear their nice fashionable jackets, thinner pants, some even ripped jeans with no tights underneath, short little ankle boots with ankle socks. That leaves space for snow to enter and the cold to give you ankle bite! If that’s even a thing. (Frostbite) Then comes the warmer days. It looks and is much grayer, but temperatures went from -17 to -7/-8 and now they wear the super extra heated clothes. I’m telling you, sometimes these people look like tourists in their own country!
I’m not saying that this is all people, but I’ve spotted quite a few. Like this couple in the metro.
Ski pants and jackets, now wait for it…
Wait for it….
UGGS!!!
Why?
I’ve seen people wear short boots like these:
That makes sense, but uggs?
Anyways, moving on!
Just outside my hostel, on both sides actually, are two schools. Every morning on my way to the bus stop, I would walk past one.
It’s so interesting when you see the kids skiing on their skis. Well it’s more like walking/gliding as there is no slopes, just a flat small surface. It’s used as a soccer field in summer. I think so because I can see the goalposts. They go around and around and their tracks are causing that you can see some dried grass, sticks and plants sticking out from under the snow. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo for you guys. When I wanted to take one, they were not outside because it was, what we call a “frost” day. (-17) Too cold to be outside.
Staying inside on a beautiful day is not so bad. Because of the sun, your mood is lifted and because it’s then super cold outside, you feel happy snuggling under a blanket in comfy, cozy and warm clothes inside your room. That’s if you don’t have class. If you do, then you feel happy in class because it’s a beautiful day and it just makes your whole day better.
Sunny days is one thing I miss to see majority of my days and secondly is the stars! Two nights ago, coming home from the gym, the sky was clear, more clear than usual because it was a “frost” day. When I looked up, and looked around, I found three stars! Only three!!! This was my first time seeing stars here! You might not think much about that, but go away to a place with no stars when you usually always see them and it’s a normal thing. Then you’ll appreciate the beauty and tranquility stars bring to your life. Same goes for the moon. I think I’ve spotted the moon a total of maybe four times. It’s the small little things like this that we take for granted, that I miss a lot. People, look around in your life and take in all the little things! It’s sad that we only appreciate them once their gone!
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I know you have it extremely hot in South Africa and I have the complete opposite. (If you are from any other part of the world, enjoy the season in your life!) But to make you feel better. Just think, while you are getting your golden tan, there is someone, aka me, over the waters turning into a vanilla milkshake! Wait no, vanilla might still be too dark! 😀
Let’s just say I might end up like this lady on the beach the next time I have a chance to get a tan… 😀
Can you spot her, I mean me!?! And no it’s not the girl sitting. Look behind her! 😀
May you all have a blessed and wonderful Sunday and week ahead!
