Can you guys believe we are at that time of the year again? For me it doesn’t feel like Christmas as this is not how I know Christmas time to be. Everyday feels like a normal work day and at home everyone is in festive holiday mode. However, I will soon get use to all these kinds of changes and start a new way of celebrating Christmas.
Like going from a Summer Christmas to a Winter one for starters!
Christmas is now officially a week away! 1 Weekend to go and then it’s the wonderful special and Holy day of our Lord Christ’s birth!
I think we sometimes get so hyped up about all the exciting things that come along with this celebration and festive season, that we forget what this day is actually all about.
I remember as a child we always had this tradition, (still do but it has changed a little as we grew up) where on Christmas eve we would have dinner as a family and only once we finished our plates were we allowed to go to the living room where the Christmas tree stood with all the presents laying all around it. Everyone would find a place to sit. Grown-ups on couches, chairs and all the children spread out on the carpet, excited to open the presents.
😀 Those moments when one of us sat to close to the tree and tried to sneak a glance at the presents and see which is for who. Then my dad, an uncle or a grandpa would catch us and tell us to scooch over! ….aaahh good times! 😀
Before the hand out of presents could start, my dad, an uncle or one of my grandfathers would read to us the story of Jesus’s birth out of the Bible and then we would close our eyes, bow our heads and pray. We would then sing a song or two. One definitely being ‘Silent Night’. This is the most special moments of Christmas to me.
When that is done then one of my grandfathers would start handing out presents. All the kids favorite part. My grandfather would “play” Christmas father (Santa Clause) and ask one of the children to be his helper. So basically he would sit on the chair at the tree and read out the cards to see who the presents is for, then hand it to the little helper and he/she would take it to that person.
My favorite part was when everyone would laugh and make jokes as the handing out of presents started.
It was so festive and joyful!
On the actual day of Christmas, the morning of the 25th, we all got ready and headed to church. No matter if we had Christmas at home or at a holiday resort, we would find a local church and attend the Christmas morning serves. Another tradition I love! I could just feel how my spirit felt warm and uplifted. Christ has come on this special day for you and me and it gives me chills all over to know that our Father in Heaven loves us this much to send His one and only Son.
This is my childhood memories that I will always cherish!
Every family has their own traditions and they also change as the years go by and it’s okay. I mean, mine definitely has changed now! The most important thing is that we don’t change the message of this celebration and remember who it’s all for. Our Lord Jesus Christ!
This may be the season of giving but don’t forget to give to the One who gave it all to us first!
